The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Presents: "Art & Facts of Business in Colorado Springs” Colorado Springs, CO. The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM) is presenting an all NEW exhibit titled “Art and Facts of Business” showcasing our unique history of businesses through time. Come and explore artifacts, photographs and historic signage from many of the businesses you remember and even some you forgot! Art & Facts of Business opens to the public June 25, 2016 from 10 am to 5 pm. “Art & Facts is designed to immerse our visitors into many of the most historic and memorable businesses in Colorado Springs history. This exhibit highlights the artful, graphic signage from the late nineteenth century that attracted shoppers inside, while showcasing the beauty of everyday objects that document a wide range of business history,” says Leah Davis Witherow, Curator of History. “Additionally, dozens of historic photographs will accompany artifacts that have never before been on exhibit. We are excited about telling Colorado Springs history in a new and visually appealing way. The show is just plain fun!” Notable features of the exhibit include artifacts from instantly recognizable businesses such as Hibbards, Lorigs and Coutures through our contemporary businesses such as Fat Bikes, GE Johnson and Elope. Historic photographs from the museum’s collection and the stunning work of local photographer Kate Doerksen’s Behind the Counter project will create opportunities to compare the past with the present. The exhibit will ask questions about how visual culture influences identity in the present. How will it be shaped in the future? What authentically local brands and companies work today to shape our identity and memory? The exhibit will examine connections between graphic design, streetscape views, store-front signs, and commercial artifacts with concepts of identity and community. Both decorative and utilitarian, signs and streetscapes speak a visual and textual language that connects people to place. While storefront signs express highly individual brands designed to stand out from their competition, viewed together they compose a memorable picture story that contributes to our collective identity. In addition to the exhibit, the museum will offer many programs to engage people of all ages! Weekend Warm-Up, is another ongoing summer program for families that runs through July 22. We will kick off this Art & Facts themed family event on Friday, July 1, from 2-4 pm. The museum will offer a craft, and then they can explore the new Art & Facts of Business exhibit before developing their own Colorado Springs-based business. Registration is required (details below). In addition to the free exhibit and programs the museum will offer Art & Facts themed walking tours (for a $5.00 fee) to dive even deeper into this downtown experience! The tours are designed to explore how downtown buildings and their tenants have changed over time. The tour will start from the museum and head to Platte Avenue where we will discover the rich business history through stories, art, and design.
