Elaina is a senior English and creative writing major at Colorado College. Since January of 2014, she has put aside her poetry writing for a few hours weekly to work in the KRCC Newsroom. As a northern Colorado native, she'd take mountains over oceans any day and keeps busy dancing, stress cleaning, and spending inordinate amounts of time in the library.

Visible Smoke, Fire Possible During Emergency Exercise at Colorado Springs Airport

Colorado Springs residents may see smoke, fire, and emergency personnel just south of the city’s airport Thursday morning.
 

It’s an exercise from the Colorado Springs Office of Emergency Management and will simulate an airplane crash and hospital patient in-processing. Emergency Management Coordinator Erin Duran says 140 service members from Fort Carson and Peterson Air Force Base will even act as crash victims, complete with stage makeup.

County Groups Conduct Transportation Survey

As the state examines how best to allocate transportation funding across Colorado, county-based regional advocacy groups, including southern Colorado’s Action 22,  are conducting a transportation survey. KRCC’s Elaina Formby reports.
 

The rise of hybrid and eco-boost vehicles has led to fewer gas station fill-ups and a marked decrease in gas tax revenue. Action 22 President and CEO Cathy Garcia says this decrease contributes to a growing divide between urban and rural parts of the state.

Update: Buena Vista Routes Re-Open

UPDATE: According to Chaffee County Sheriff spokeswoman Laura Smith, an x-ray of the explosive device determined it was a "practice round" and nothing suspicious.  The Buena Vista Police Department re-took custody of the scene, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will take the device back to the crime lab for processing.  Streets have reopened and the investigation is ongoing.

Two Incidents, Two Avalanche Related Deaths

Two are dead in separate avalanches in Colorado this week.  KRCC’s Elaina Formby reports.
 

One avalanche caught two snowmobilers, killing one near Kebler Pass, west of Crested Butte.  Another avalanche by the North Fork Swan River, south of Keystone Ski Resort, caught two skiers. One escaped, the other, a man in his 40s from the Front Range, was found dead at 11:30 this morning.

Study Finds Higher Rate of Texting & Driving Among Never-Deployed Military

A study by USAA finds higher rates of texting while driving among service members who have never been deployed than among those who have.  KRCC’s Elaina Formby reports.
 

The company’s study shows more than half of active-service military who have never been deployed admit to texting while driving, as compared to 39% of those previously deployed. The rate dips another five percent for service members within six months of returning from deployment.

Audit: School Meal Program Missed Funding Opportunities

Colorado’s School Meal Program missed out on federal money and grants that could have been used to help feed students in need, according to an audit released Tuesday. KRCC's Elaina Formby reports.
 

The Office of School Nutrition, or OSN, runs the School Meal Program in Colorado and is responsible for monitoring districts’ adherence to state and federal terms.

Report Details Challenges and Support Opportunities for El Paso County's Aging

El Paso County’s senior population is expected to jump an estimated 179 percent over the next thirty years. KRCC’s Elaina Formby has more on a new report identifying possible ways to help support the growing demographic.
 

According to a report from the Innovations in Aging Collaborative and Peak Vista Community Health Centers, El Paso County’s seniors are challenged by gaps in transportation, healthcare, and housing options.

Penrose-St. Francis Recognized for Nursing

Penrose-St. Francis is now the first hospital in southern Colorado to attain Magnet recognition for its nursing. According to a press release from the hospital, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, or ANCC, currently recognizes less than a tenth of the nation’s hospitals with Magnet distinction. Hospitals must apply for the credential and undergo a rigorous review process, including onsite. To maintain the rating, facilities must reapply every four years and demonstrate improvement in patient care and outcomes.

Volunteers Sought for Call Center Ops During Large Emergencies

Officials in the Pikes Peak region are seeking volunteers to help staff call centers in the event of another large emergency. The effort comes from Pikes Peak United Way 211, the City of Colorado Springs, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
