The music director at the Colorado Springs Philharmonic has renewed his contract indefinitely.

The Philharmonic's Board of Directors unanimously decided to extend Josep Caballé-Domenech's contract, which was originally good through August.

Nathan Newbrough is the President and CEO of the Philharmonic. He says he thinks Caballé-Domenech is the right candidate for moving the orchestra into a new era.

"When we first saw Josep on the podium," he says, "when he first came as a guest conductor as sort of a surprise visitor, he absolutely blew us away. It was so obvious to everyone present that this person is the future of the Philharmonic."

Caballé-Domenech succeeded Lawrence Leighton Smith, who stepped down in 2011, a year that also came with a diagnosis of a form of dementia for Smith.

The Philharmonic recently announced their 90th concert season.
