The Colorado Springs Airport is open again today after a three-alarm fire Monday night prompted its closure and the cancellation of all commercial flights Tuesday.
"There will be limited-reduced air service, though all carriers will provide service," Colorado Springs Airport spokeswoman Aiden Ryan said yesterday. "So if you have a flight going out [Wednesday], double-check with that carrier just to make sure your flight is still on schedule."
Some areas of the airport will remain closed or blocked off while repairs are being made, and Ryan said that one baggage claim area will temporarily stay shut down. The extent of the damages, she said, is on the west side of the terminal.
Colorado Springs Fire Department Chief Ted Collas said the fire damage was limited to two levels. "The ceiling, or the roof, of the level we're in right now, and then also the third level, where administrative conference rooms and administrative offices are. That's where the extent of the fire damage is." Collas added that there's also water damage, which has affected the first level of the airport.
Inspectors, though, have deemed the airport safe, said Ryan. "We have a letter of approval from our structural engineer who has assessed all of the damage," she said. "Additionally, we'll be monitoring all the air control, and as of right now, it is in good shape and we'll continuously monitor it and anything that happens."
No one was hurt in the overnight fire, and the cause is under investigation. Collas expects findings will be released by the end of the week.
