Palmer Land Trust Announces 2013 Award Winners
Colorado faces some of the greatest conservation challenges in the nation. And it responds with some of the greatest conservation successes—championed by people for whom protecting important places, leading by example, teaching our children about the natural world, and setting new benchmarks for a sustainable future are a part of their daily lives. Each year Palmer Land Trust honors four of these champions at the Southern Colorado Conservation Awards:
The Stuart P. Dodge Award
Honoring lifetime achievement in conservation. Winner: Walt Hecox, Professor of economics in the Environmental Program at Colorado College and the Project Director of the Colorado College State of the Rockies Project.
The Stewardship Award
Honoring an organization that has positively impacted the land and the way members of our communities understand and respect their relationship to the land. Winner: Renee Rondeau, Ecologist and Conservation Planner, Colorado Natural Heritage Program, Colorado State University.
The Innovation in Conservation Award
Honoring the development of new conservation models, the creation of new conservation funding mechanisms, and implementation of unique conservation partnerships that protect our natural heritage. Winner: Arkansas Voluntary Flow Management Program, Arkansas River Outfitters Association
The Friends of Open Space Award
Honoring efforts that lead to the protection of a significant landscape in southern Colorado. Winner: Harry Talbott and Talbott Family Farms, Colorado’s largest peach grower and packer. A founding member of Mesa Land Trust and shaper of the Mesa’s Fruitlands Forever Initiative, conserving a critical mass of land to support the fruit industry into the future.
The 2013 Southern Colorado Conservation Awards winners will be honored on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at the Cheyenne Mountain Conference Resort in Colorado Springs. Cocktails begin at 5:00 PM. Dinner will be served at 6:00 PM. Cost is $75 and includes a farm-to-table dinner, featuring local foods.
Award winners were nominated by the community at-large and selected by a Blue Ribbon Panel.
