  • The National Space Science and Technology Institute, based in Colorado Springs, has submitted a special-use permit application to the Pikes Peak Ranger District, which asks for permission to build an observatory atop Pikes Peak. The request will also be reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office as well as the National Park Service. Mayor John Suthers indicates he’s in favor of the observatory, saying the attraction would build needed interest in space, according to the Col. Spgs. Gazette. If approved, the Space Science and Technology Institute hopes the observatory would be in place by autumn of 2021, when the city expects construction on the new Summit House to be finished.
