Maketa Recall Effort Fails

Embattled El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa will not face a recall election in November. Organizers of the effort had until 1:00 Saturday to turn in the more than 44,000 signatures needed for the recall.

Randy Stagner was one of the petition coordinators. He told the Colorado Springs Gazette they’d collected more than 48,000 signatures. Stagner said the group wasn’t confident they’d pass the verification process though, so they decided not to submit the signatures instead of using taxpayer money to verify the names.

Sheriff Maketa faces allegations of misconduct, including sexual discrimination, budget mismanagement and creating a hostile work environment. He has repeatedly said he won’t step down. The state constitution prohibits another recall attempt since Maketa’s term ends in January, which is within six months.
