Prescribed Burn Classes Offered to Landowners

May 4, 2015

Private landowners can now sign up for classes focusing on how to conduct safer pile burns. KRCC’s Dana Cronin reports.

Those who complete the course become certified burners and will also be protected on a limited basis from civil liability.

"It’s not just a simple go out and light the match. There’s a lot of steps that go into prescribed fire,” said Mike Frary, Unit Chief for Prescribed Fire for the Division of Fire Prevention and Control.

"Getting the word out on how to do it properly and safely, that’s our goal here. To teach people how to do it in a more safe and planned manner.”

Participants will learn about fire behavior, how to safely build piles, and the liability that comes with prescribed burning on private property.

To receive the five-year certification, one must complete the two and a half day class as well as three practice burns.

The next course takes place in southwest Colorado, while a class coming up in June takes place in Salida.
