The deadline for the first marijuana tax funded scholarship in Pueblo is fast approaching, but there haven't been many applicants yet.

The scholarship is funded by an excise tax on marijuana cultivation in Pueblo County that passed in 2015. The funds total $25,000, which will be awarded to 25 recipients in $1,000 increments.

Pueblo County spokeswoman Paris Carmichael says they haven't received many applications yet, but they expect about 100 to come in before the deadline:

"So far, the Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation has only received three complete applications for the Pueblo County Scholarship Fund," as of Wednesday afternoon, Carmichael says. "Historically, students are known to do things at the last minute, so they're not alarmed at this point."

Carmichael says applicants for the scholarship must be graduating high school seniors in Pueblo County who plan on attending an institution in Pueblo. They must also have a GPA of over 3.0, and perform a minimum of 40 hours of community service. The deadline for applications is Friday at 5pm.
