Volunteers Sought for Call Center Ops During Large Emergencies

Officials in the Pikes Peak region are seeking volunteers to help staff call centers in the event of another large emergency. The effort comes from Pikes Peak United Way 211, the City of Colorado Springs, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Volunteer call-takers would operate under the Joint Information Center, or JIC, to help release official information to the media and the public. Ideal volunteers are those who can show patience and empathy while under stress, and are computer literate. Volunteers would be contacted as needed to fill call center shifts. The Gazette reports officials have used volunteers in the past, and that organizers are looking for around 250 residents to step-in.

The Huerfano County Office of Emergency Management is also working on a similar project. Those interested there can call the office in Walsenburg.
