Handbells have been around for centuries. Originally invented for church bell tower players to practice their songs, they took on a life of their own in handbell ensembles, where groups of musicians play carefully choreographed arrangements on the tuned bells. For this story from the latest episode of Air Check, 91.5 KRCC’s Vicky Gregor and Jake Brownell visited a local handbell group to learn more about the music.

Colorado Springs resident Craig Carnick had a front row seat to one of the great eras in American music. Back in the 1960s, he worked the night shift as a recording engineer at Motown Studios in Detroit, Michigan.

April's episode of Air Check announces NPR's Tiny Desk Series move to Colorado Springs--just kidding. But it does bring Colorado Springs musician and Alex Koshak back from a tour with Esme Patterson, where they performed at the real Tiny Desk in NPR's headquarters in Washington D.C. John Craigie, modern-day troubadour, drops in to play a few songs from his new album No Rain, No Rose; Craig Carnick tells the story of Motown Studios where he worked the night shift as a recording engineer in the 1960s; and the Bells of St. Vrain share the art of handbell performance.

Musicians from all over the world are settling back at home, recovering from last week's South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. Hundreds of musicians played throughout the week, for crowds big and small.

The members of U2 are preparing a new tour to play some old songs — 30 years old, to be exact. Paul Hewson and David Evans, known to the world as Bono and The Edge, will be the first to tell you their band isn't normally fond of looking back.

Photographer Larry Hulst, whose photographs of rock and roll icons are currently on display at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, never imagined that his pictures would one day be hanging in an art museum.

91.5 KRCC will be introducing listeners to some new favorites this Monday, March 6th.  I hope you will join us at 10am weekday mornings for news and topical debate with NPR's 1A.  91.5 KRCC is also adding the popular economic news program Marketplace, to our weekday line up at 3pm and 6:30pm.

I'm really excited to be able to present the "new" A Prairie Home Companion with Chris Thile of the bands Nicklecreek and The Punch Brothers hosting the show on Saturdays 4pm to 6pm, and Sunday mornings from 10am to noon.

Music fans can rest assured that 91.5 KRCC Music Director Vicky Gregor will continue to curate music weekday evenings from 7pm to 10pm, with great community volunteers rounding out the music block from 10pm to midnight.

Your favorite weekend music shows will include my Blue Plate Special blues show every Saturday night at 7pm, followed by Vintage Voltage with GT at 8pm.

On Sunday evenings you can relax and expand your music education through the Jazz Excursion with host Dick Fairley at 7pm. End your weekends with great reggae from host Ron Wilson starting at 10pm. See the entire new schedule here.

We are working on digital on-demand deliveries of all of our local music shows through our website, and on mobile apps that are available for iPhones and Android devices on iTunes and Google Play. We hope to have this feature live next week so you can listen to 91.5 KRCC Music whenever and wherever you want. Stay tuned!

Thank you for your support,
Jeff Bieri
