Portions of Pikes Peak Closed this Week
Portions of Pikes Peak will be closed this week to shoot the next installment in the Fast and Furious franchise. Another closure is expected this fall, as Hyundai is scheduled to shoot a car commercial there. Donald Zuckerman is the Colorado Film commissioner. He says that before the film incentive program, Colorado wasn’t even being considered by the movie industry.
“If you want a mountain, a nice mountain you can go to Alberta, you can go to Utah, and they both have very very strong incentive programs. So now having an incentive program, we now have a telephone that is ringing.”
Colorado’s incentive rate is 20 percent, well below popular shooting locations like Canada. Three films, along with the Hyundai commercial will take up the remaining 2.7 million dollars of this year’s film incentive budget. The Pikes Peak Cog Railway will remain under a normal operating schedule.
Planned closures (from the city's press release):
September 4 and 5
Pikes Peak Highway – CLOSED from Glen Cove to the summit. Visitors will not be allowed to go above Glen Cove nor access the summit via the Pikes Peak Highway.
North Slope area - OPEN as usual
September 6 and September 10
Pikes Peak Highway, including the North Slope Recreation Area - CLOSED to all visitors.
These areas will be open to visitors and the summit on the other dates, weather permitting, but there will be filming activities during our operating hours so visitors should anticipate intermittent traffic delays on the highway.
Access to the summit via Barr Trail and Crags Trail is open; however, hikers should be prepared to hike off of the mountain as the highway will be closed and there will be no transportation from the summit via the Pikes Peak Highway.
The Pikes Peak Cog Railway will operate during their normal scheduled hours during these closures.
