Firefighters in Fremont County continue to battle the Eightmile Fire that broke out one week ago. KRCC’s Tucker Hampson reports.
Firefighters are working to increase containment as the lightning-caused blaze continues to move north and northeast in Fremont County. Information Officer John Peterson says firefighters are holding their lines and by late morning the fire had grown by less than 30 acres in 24 hours.
"We feel we have good handle on the fire," said Peterson, "though that could change rapidly. We have a lot of firefighters on the scene; we believe that there’s a very low risk to private property and homes in the area though we do still have a pre-evacuation order in place.
Peterson says the fire is currently 25% contained and covers over 524 acres near Cañon City. Pre-evacuation notices remain in effect for 16 residences in the Red Rocks subdivision. Phantom Canyon Road remains closed. Hot and dry conditions continued today, with Red Flag conditions still in effect.
